.NET Gadgeteer

Microsoft has released a new rapid prototyping toolkit that promises to let electronic enthusiasts put together small gadgets in a matter of hours. Devices built with the kit, dubbed .NET Gadgeteer, include an MP3 player, digital camera, and a mini arcade cabinet.

At the heart of the kit is a main circuit board with an embedded processor and a variety of sockets that can be linked with other .NET Gadgeteer modules. These include a touchscreen, a camera, LEDs, buttons, and USB and SD card interfaces, all of which can be slotted together like electronic Lego without the need for soldering.

On the software side, Microsoft has set up a website to share the open-source code that controls the various .NET Gadgeteer modules. Users can also write their own software in C#, a popular programming language.

.NET Gadgeteer è una piattaforma hardware/software per la prototipazione rapida nata come progetto interno del MS Reseach Centre di Cambridge, ma che ora vede la luce come prodotto commerciale.

Questo tipo di piattaforme (come la ben più famosa Arduino) permette di creare (o prototipare) device elettronici con poco sforzo, e anche con ridotte conoscenze di programmazione.

In testa ho messo ad esempio il video di costruzione di un semplice gioco arcade, e se volete qui potete vedere un lettore MP3 assemblato con questa piattaforma.

La .NET Gadgeteer permette infatti il collegamento di diversi moduli multimediali (schermi, usb, fotocamere, …), supporta software scritto in C# Micro Framework e ha già un suo spazio riservato su CodePlex.

Lo Starter Kit (che comprende tutta la robina che vedete in spoiler) costa $249,95 su GHI Electronics; non proprio cheap, ma la dotazione è interessante.
