Edison però fece centinaia di copie e le mostrò nei teatri di New York City. Méliès non ricevette un cent. Edison lo pirateggiò alla grande manco fosse Bill Gates. Méliès contava di inviare le copie negli states per recuperare gli enormi costi sostenuti per le realizzazione (ed anche per la duplicazione fatta da Edison). In pratica Edison provocò la bancarotta di Méliès.
