[b]UPDATE: Jeri Ryan has revealed on her Twitter account what the video was made for – “Not a game trailer. Actually was made by the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.”

Where it came from, who’s behind it and what purpose it serves is yet unknown, but the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short film, released today via YouTube, is worth seven and a half minutes of your day. Living up to its subtitle, its goal is to seemingly reinvent the entire universe set by the past 15 years of arcade fighting games.
What’s interesting about the short is, well, a lot of things. First and foremost, its proximity to next week’s E3 is nothing short of suspicious. It’s a well-produced, film-quality trailer with some big name actors — Michael Jai White and Jerri Ryan are instantly recognizable faces. Something with this much effort, though, probably isn’t tied to just an announcement of a new Mortal Kombat. So where does it fit? Why does it exist?
One possibility is that Rebirth is a teaser for an upcoming movie adaptation. Rumors of a new entry in the MK film franchise circled for years before it supposedly derailed and died. A more frightening prospect is that this is a lead in to a new Mortal Kombat film/game crossover or tie-in. That the MK team is working on a new MK game is public knowledge. So is Warner Brothers’ interest in the series. Are these interests related?
