Basato su fatti realmente accaduti (almeno in parte), sceneggiatura di John Ridley basata su un’idea iniziale di [i]George Lucas[/i].
Lucas lavora su questo progetto dal 1988, considerando la storia alla base del film “troppo bella per essere vera”.
La Lucasfilm è arrivata ad invitare i sopravvissuti della Tuskegee allo Skywalker Ranch per intervistarli sui fatti effettivamente accaduti ed ha addirittura avuto accesso ai libri di volo riservati dell’epoca usati dagli stessi piloti.
La produzione è iniziata nel marzo 2009, le riprese si sono tenute nella Repubblica Ceca, in Italia, in Croazia ed in Inghilterra.
