Questo Tex non s’ha da fare

Chi sia Tex è superfluo dirlo. A meno che non siate dei rettiliani sciichimicisti che avete vissuto in un altro pianeta fino a questo istante. Chi sia Mike Deodato Jr. forse è meglio specificarlo, perché magari alcuni non sono strettamente ferrati in termini di disegnatori americani.

In soldoni, Mike Deodato Jr. (al secolo Deodato Taumaturgo Borges Filho) è un disegnatore di origine brasiliana, attualmente in seno alla Marvel, particolarmente apprezzato per il suo lavoro sulla serie Thunderbolts, Dark Avengers e sulla recentissima saga adesso-ti-invento-un-nuovo-crossover-per-aumentare-le-vendite nota con il nome di “Original Sin”.

Oltre a questo si è dilettato anche con tanti altri fumetti, sia per DC che Dark Horse, ed è stato l’ospite di punta per Panini della passata edizione del Lucca Comics.

Ora, Tex è in giro circa da 67 anni ed è stato pubblicato anche oltreoceano, in particolare con lunga continuità in Brasile.

Sommiamo tutte queste cose e otteniamo ciò che segue: “A Deodato sarebbe piaciuto disegnare Tex.”

Bellissimo, penseranno in molti, ma altrettanti avranno sicuramente notato il condizionale nella frase sopra. Eh si, perché Mike Deodato Jr. che si autodefinisce “the nicest man in the world” non ha propriamente usato dei toni pacati:

Traduzione: “Ho appena mandato un editor della Bonelli a farsi fottere. Sarò anche la persona più gentile del mondo, ma questo ha passato il limite. Addio Tex.”

e non solo, sulla sua pagina Facebook ha persino rincarato la dose.

I just told a Bonelli editor to f*** himself. I’m the nicest guy in the universe, but that madman passed all limits. The Tex drawings you saw were the last I’ll ever do. I will never draw the character again.

Traduzione: “Ho appena detto ad un editore Bonelli di farsi fottere. Sono la persona più gentile nell’universo ma questo folle ha passato ogni limite. I disegni di Tex che avete visto (e che sono in questo articolo) saranno gli ultimi che farò. Non disegnerò mai più il personaggio.”

L’editor in questione ha un nome e cognome e si chiama Mauro Boselli, curatore della testata dal 2012, sceneggiatore di diverse storie ed ideatore, fra le altre cose, di Dampyr insieme a Maurizio Colombo.

Cosa si è rotto fra i due? Che incomprensioni ci saranno mai state?

Fortunatamente per rispondere a questa domanda ci viene in aiuto il “gentilissimo” Mike, che ha ben pensato di diffondere pubblicamente tutto lo scambio di e-mail fra lui e il suo possibile datore di lavoro (cosa se non erro illegale), ed in soldoni quanto leggerete di seguito può essere riassunto nel seguente modo:

La conversazione, che è stata censurata relativamente a nomi, numeri di telefono e cifre, inizia il 6 novembre. Deodato ripete la dichiarazione d’amore per Tex che aveva rilasciato a Fumettologica. Boselli gli consiglia di iniziare con degli studi “seri” sui personaggi principali (Deodato aveva infatti fatto delle illustrazioni sulla sua pagina ufficiale a scopo di divertimento personale) e si offre di inviargli una partita di fumetti di Tex come riferimento. Ma le illustrazioni di Deodato non vanno bene, perché mancano degli studi a figura intera dello stesso personaggio e dei suoi comprimari. La discussione prosegue, e i toni si accendono, fino ad arrivare a uno scambio di insulti davvero pittoresco.

Di seguito le varie e-mail, rigorosamente in senso cronologico ed esattamente come sono state pubblicate da Deodato, se volete la traduzione la trovate qui:

I’m impressed with your technique and style, notwithstanding some freedom of interpretation. Do you draw only in “mezzatinta”? The director Macheselli has some perplexiity about that. We don’t do Tex that way, but it could be in COLOURS…

Happy you like it, Mauro. I work in a range of styles. I wanted to emulate Milazzo’s on those samples. If you don’t want “mezzatinta” I can do it in pure black, no problem. My original style is usually way more straight and way less loose, but I thought it would be more suited to the story if I loosen up.

I live in Brasil, so it is 4 hours difference for less here. It is 7:47 in the morning here right now.

Sorry for taking so long to answer, Mauro. After a lot of talking Marvel finally gave me permission to draw that Tex story if you are still interested.

Marvel work has priority, so it will take a long time for me to finish it, since I’d be working on it only during my free time. It may take a whole year or six months, hard to predict since I don’t know the volume of work coming ahead from MArvel (In normal conditions I’m pretty quick: I finished the last issue of Original Sin – a 30 page story – in 30 days ).

Well, that sum is simply too impossibly high. You certainly know that Tex sells well, but you don’t realize that each issue has 110 pages!! We can’t pay such astronomical sums and you already knew it.

Unlike you, I AM a professional, I do not take hints, I go direct to the point. You asked me to think about what we talked in the phone, I thought, I answered your question and instead of acting like a pro and politely declined and explained your reasons, you treated me disrespectfully.

It’s a miracle you are still doing this job. I know Bonelli Editore is going through an hard time since Sergio’s death. Very bad time. Only five years ago, with Sergio alive and well, nothing like that could have ever happened. All the talents were treated with the respect that everyone deserves. Reading things like this make me sad for the state of the Italian industry.

Deodato però non ha finito qui, perché da bravo flamer ha ben pensato di bloccare su ogni social chiunque gli facesse notare che poteva averla presa male, nonostante fosse anche in parte giustificato, e che comunque una certa parte di colpa la aveva anche lui, di certo non aumentando le opinioni a suo favore, arrivando persino a minacciare di botte anche altri editor Bonelli.

Deodato però non ha finito qui, perché da ben pensato di bloccare su ogni social chiunque gli facesse notare che poteva avere avuto una reazione eccessiva

Personalmente ritengo che una ottima opinione sulla faccenda sia stata espressa da Roberto Recchioni (Dylan Dog, Orfani) sul suo blog personale (trovate l’articolo qui) aggiungo che a me pare strano che un disegnatore chieda compensi stratosferici per qualcosa per cui comunque non da garanzie specifiche di consegna, oltre alla frecciatina ai “bei vecchi tempi di Bonelli” che si poteva tranquillamente risparmiare.

La questione sta infiammando il web, almeno sulle pagine dei diretti interessati e di chi è in qualche modo legato a loro, e chi sta facendo figure sempre più magre è lo stesso Deodato, che si sta accanendo con una ferocia davvero fuori scala, portandomi a credere che ci sia una una soluzione:
