Elfoid: il vero telefono androide
Robotics researchers from Osaka University have teamed up with NTT Docomo and Qualcomm to develop a handheld humanoid phone that brings a new dimension to mobile communications. A prototype of the device — called “Elfoid P1” — was unveiled at a presentation in Tokyo on March 3.The Elfoid phone is a miniature version of the Telenoid R1 robot developed last year by a research team led by Osaka University professor Hiroshi Ishiguro. The current prototype measures 20 centimeters (8 in) long, is covered in a soft fleshy urethane skin, and has the same genderless and ageless appearance as the Telenoid. The control buttons are embedded in the chest, which glows green when the Elfoid is in use.
Like the full-sized Telenoid robot, the Elfoid handset is designed to add an element of realism to long-distance communication by recreating the physical presence of a remote user.
The current prototype is unable to move, but future versions will incorporate tiny motors and parts made from shape-memory alloys, allowing the Elfoid to move its eyes, mouth, neck and arms. Other features will include a temperature sensor, accelerometer, and an easy-to-use voice and gesture based interface.

Il 3 marzo scorso è stato presentato a Tokyo il prototipo dell’Elfoid: un dispositivo mobile basato su una versione miniaturizzata e portatile del perturbante robot antropomorfo Telenoid R1 di Hiroshi Hishiguro (che potete vedere in azione in tutta la sua morbosità in questo articolo.).
Lo scopo del dispositivo (già ironicamente ribattezzato “the real android phone”) è simile a quello del fratello maggiore: simulare, tramite la robotica, l’apparenza e la sensazione di una reale presenza umana. Per questo il prototipo è in grado, grazie ad una videocamera integrata, di riconoscere espressioni e postura dell’utente e comunicarle ad un altro telefono Elfoid il quale le riproduce in tempo reale.
Attualmente il prototipo si comanda tramite pulsanti integrati nel busto e non è in grado di muoversi, ma l’obiettivo è di sviluppare un’interfaccia vocale e gestuale, nonché incorporare piccoli motori e parti realizzate in materiali a memoria di forma che permetteranno all’Elfoid di muovere braccia(?), occhi, collo e bocca.
Un progetto veramente fuori di testa (qualcuno ha detto ”giapponesi”?) e che, nella mia umile opinione, non incontrerà mai nessun vero mercato (a meno che non se li compri tutti David Cronenberg), ma sicuramente affascinante da un punto di vista concettuale, o anche solo per la curiosità di vedere con quanto coraggio possiamo addentrarci nelle profondità della Uncanny Valley.
